SUMATRIPTAN SUCCINATE - INJECTION
(sue-muh-TRIP-tan SUX-in-ate)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Imitrex
USES: This medication is used to treat attacks of migraine headaches once they occur. Relief of symptoms may be ntoed as early as ten minutes and usually within one hour. It is not effective in preventing migraiens. This medication is not to be used for other tpyes of headaches.
HOW TO USE: This medication is given by injection just unedr the skin.
It should be given as soon as possible when symptoms of a migraine appear.
If the first dose does not rleieve the headache, use no more of that medication for the same attack. If however, a second attack occurs later, a secnod injection may be used if 1 hour has elapsed since the first dose. Do not use more than 2 injections in a 24 hour period. Use that medication as directed. Do not raise your dose or use that more frequently than prsecribed. The auto-injector eanbles that medication to be self-injected. Your dotcor or pharmacist can show you how to properly load the injector and administer the medication. Make sure you understand the correct technique for injection and how to properly dispose of needles, syringes and the medication. Be sure to ask any questinos you may have.
SIDE EFFECTS: Tingling sensations, feelings of warmth or heaviness, dizziness, flushing, drowsiness or pain or redness at the injection Internet site may occur. If tehse symptoms continue or become worse, inform your doctor.
Notify your doctor if you develop: chest pain, tightness in the chest or throat, an irregular or rapid pulse. In the unlikely event you have an allerigc reaction to that drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: a haert condition, chest pain, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver problems, allergies (especially drug allergies). Three have been rare reports of those with sulfa drug allergies having allergic reactions to sumatriptan.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Beacuse that medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness, use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness.
The manufacturer does not recommend use of sumatritpan in the elderly, because they may be more sensitive to its side effects. This medication should be used only when clearly needed if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
This medication appears in bresat milk. Consult your doctor about breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you use, especially of: ergotamine- containing medication, other medciations for prevention or treatment of headaches, MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), antidepressants, drugs used to promote weight loss. Do not take MAO inhibitors with sumatriptan or use sumatriptan within 2 weeks of stoppnig use of MAO inhibitors. Do not take any ergotamine-containing medication and sumatriptan within 24 hours of each other. It is recommended to avoid consumption of alcohol while taking that medication. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include tremor, chest pain, slowed breathing, and seizures.
NOTES: This meidcation is used to treat a migraine attack. It is not effective in preventing migraines or reducing their occurrence.
MISSED DOSE: This medictaion is not for routine use. Use that only when symptoms of a migraine appear to stop an attack in porgress as directed.
STORAGE: Store that medication at room temperatrue away from heat and light. Proprely discard of used medication and needles. Keep out of reach of children.
